Abstract

The present investigation seeks to answer to the challenge ANICP made of finding new markets for the Portuguese canned fish industry. The key research question is therefore: How the macro trends influence the selection of an international market? To respond to the challenges posed, a case study approach was adopted based in information gathered from several origins, including ANICP internal data as well data gathered from the association´s website and external data sources. Research has shown that the most appealing international market for Portuguese fish preserves will be South Korea, due to its high consumption of fish per capita, the high purchasing power of its citizens and the presence of a free trade agreement between South Korea and the European Union, which allows canned fish to be exported without paying any tariff.
