The accompanist has always been considered a second class pianist, suffering of a lack of recognition and merit, comparably to the solo pianist. Beyond having the same technical and musical training than a solo pianist, the accompanist crosses his instrument’s borders in order to communicate with other musicians, such as professional players and musical students. Therefore, the main goal of this dissertation is to investigate and clarify the multifaceted role of the accompanist, and its influence in the musical learning of young music players in both basic and secondary music education. This research is based in 35 questionnaires applied to both current and former students from music schools, conservatoires and artistic professional schools. Additionally, 11 interviews were made to relevant personalities from the Portuguese music education system, such as music school principals, instrument teachers and professional accompanists. The data obtained through these methodologies were submitted to a quantitative analysis (the software used was SPSS Statistics - Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) and to a qualitative analysis, respectively. The data analysis showed the great significance of regular piano accompaniment during the student’s instrumental learning, due to its contribution to their technical and musical development. Moreover, this study clarified the various roles of the accompanist in a music institution, such as the rehearsal guidance without the instrument professor, the feedback in the performance rehearsals and as a psychological advisor. In conclusion, the music student shares moments of anxiety, insecurity and success with the accompanist in and outside the stage. Therefore, it’s created between pianist and student an essential complicity to a productive musical collaboration and consequently, to a successful performance.
