Universities’ internationalization is now accepted as a key strategy of higher education institutions, from the context of economic globalization and competitiveness in the higher education sector. Universities choose to create strategic alliances with various entities, such as national and international higher education institutions, financial institutions, companies, among others, in order to increase their global visibility and to reach goals that universities would not be able to achieve by themselves. The impact of the internationalization of universities is on the rise and it can be visible in various universities’ rankings. On the other hand, alliances can benefit both parties and are a source to achieve competitive advantage. However, this article also shows that alliances between companies may fail and, sometimes, the entities must be prepared to choose the best communication strategy for the dissolution of a relationship. This study is intended to show the impact of the internationalization of universities in strategic alliances. In particular, it attempts to analyze, through a specific case, what are the consequences of the internationalization of universities in strategic alliances with the financial sector.
