Abstract

This report concerns the final internship taken in a Public healthcare Unit at the Regional Health Administration of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley. The report relates to the Master’s Degree in Nursing in Public and Community Healthcare at Lisbon’s Nursing School of the Science Studies Institute, Universidade Católica Portuguesa.Covid-19 pandemic has been considered the most challenging public health emergency crisis ever faced (WHO, 2020a). “Covid-19 is a contagious, and potentially preventable disease, and precautions focused on the virus transmission are the key point. In order to contain the widespread of the disease, and bearing in mind its current stage, recommendations stress the importance of precautionary measures as crucial means to provide a shock-absorbing effect, restrain infections and prevent transmission (WHO, 2020b, 2020d).This project was developed following the awareness of healthcare needs in a social housing community within USP’s area of influence, which focused on the community’s ability to learn and follow precautionary measures. The chosen methodology for this project was set on a health planning process, and Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model was the chosen theoretical frame of reference. After prioritization, the nursing diagnoses and records (CIPE diagnoses) were as followed: unproven knowledge about distancing; understanding on how to use protective gear (mask use), and knowledge about personal hygiene procedures (hand washing).A community-oriented approach was followed, and it was grounded on a health education strategy. Also, the local community representatives’ engagement and the local religious leader’s collaboration were of extreme importance. The project has contributed not only to a structured, close, personal and socio-culturally proficient intervention, but also to an opportunity to strengthen health promotion both currently and for the future. Furthermore, this project has contributed for the development of community nursing skills.
