Abstract

This report describes and analyzes all the activities that were carried during the internship to allow the acquisition of the general and specific competencies to be Paediatric Nurse. The analysis was based on a critical reflection on the nursing interventions developed throughout the internship, to promote the the competencies related to parenting twins and contribute to the development of positive parenting during the hospitalization of the children. The internship took place in clinical contexts of assistance to children/adolescents and their families, specifically the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Paediatric Emergency Room and Paediatric Ward, between September 6th 2021 and December 18th 2021. The methodology used in this report was descriptive, analytic, and reflexive supported by search, allowing the development of specific competencies related to the caring of a child/adolescents and family throughout the life span, maintaining and promoting health as well as providing the treatment of acute sickness, supporting in chronic illness condition and hospitalization, whenever necessary. These activities target the goal of providing excellent nursing interventions and optimizing the environment of nursing practice. This report showcases the learning in various specific areas of paediatric nursing, such as: parenting; partnership and negotiation of care; communication strategies with the child/adolescents and family age, development and culturally appropriate; evaluation of growth and infants’ development; intervention in common diseases; recognition of lifethreatening situations; promotion of death’s dignity and grieving process; pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain management strategies; breastfeeding and promoting binding. I would like to highlight, also, the care in especially complex situations and the development of the self-reflective ability, together with the constant search of new scientific knowledge, the great pillars of a practice supported by current scientific evidence and the gain of specialized nurse and, hence, the elaboration of the report.
