Abstract

The definition of Restorative Justice (RJ) has sparked an intense debate to this day and around the world. The main objective of the present study is to explore and understand the definition of Restorative Justice by several professionals working within the scope of the juvenile justice system in Portugal. We sought to access the perceptions of Magistrates, Victim Support Officers and Officers working directly with offenders, about the definition of JR. Participants in the study were 6 Magistrates, 4 Victim Support Officers and 8 Officers working with offenders. The results point to 4 types of definitions that are organized in different ways: definition as opposed to the traditional criminal justice model; definition according to the context of action; definition according to the objectives, processes and results and definition according to the actors of the processes. In addition to the four types of definitions found, there were significant differences in the perceptions of the participants according to their professional category.
