The purpose of this study was to assess the trend of families regarding the free choice of schools for their children by means of a school voucher. In face of a civil society subject to (and fettered by) the ideological tenets imposed by the State-Educator, an implementation of the free school choice system has become urgent, streamlining the public school system as a means (and a way) to overcome the inefficiency and deep crisis of the public education system in Portugal. Based on a questionnaire to carers, it was possible to identify the trend of the families regarding the free choice of schools outside the norms of the “school map” reality (in Portugal, students attend a specific school, within their neighbourhood or their parents’ workplace). This trend sets a (r)evolution as there is a switch from “regulatory supply" to “regulatory demand” in terms of school planning, highlighting the new areas of interdependence or competition already emerging between neighbouring schools, with visible effects on how equal opportunities and educational success are (are not) guaranteed.
