Abstract

This research - about leadership from the perspective of the other - aims to help us understanding how empathy, warmth and respect can make a difference in the leadership process. To investigate this issue, our paper has the following structure: the first chapter, which is a brief framework of the world we live in going back to the seventies, in that we are witnessing major changes. In Portugal, under the April Revolution, the rest of the world as a result of the end of the Cold War and the beginning of globalization. This time of change has also produced a strong impact in the business world. Therefore, in the second chapter, we discuss the theory of Daniel Goleman and his proposal to apply emotional intelligence to leadership. In the third chapter, we stopped in the space of knowledge, a space in the hope one day to become, according to Pierre Levy. An experiment conducted by American consulting firm McKinsey, also aroused our interest, as a new approach to address the emerging difficulties of women in business. The Servant Leadership, by Robert Greenleaf experience, started in North America, which we translated as liderança de serviço, gathered our attention because it shows the need to serve as the key to good leadership, and a leader in an entirely new dimension: to serve first. On the cliff of Montserrat we found the genesis of another experiment: the leadership according to the Rule of St. Benedict, which draws a parallel between the monastic community and the company. The fourth chapter is devoted to the thought of Hannah Arendt, especially with regard to the emphasis on action and respect. In the fifth chapter presents an analysis of the interview with Paulo Macedo, made under his leadership during the period of time who presided over the destinies of the DGCI (2004-2007). Finally, chapter six, with an overall examination of all the equipment worked, reflecting the need of the ecology of the action and presents a triad composed of the qualities for a new leadership; empathy, warmth and respect. These are the insignia, we believe, that allow recognizing the nobility of the leader of the twenty-first century.
