Abstract

The dissertation we present: “Traditional Portuguese Music in the 1º and 2º degrees of Class-Choir and Musical Training subjects of the Vocational Teaching Music” aims at implementing traditional music in the educational context as well as promoting it and making it known. This way, and supporting our research on the actions of some pedagogues and ethnomusicologists, we propose the analysis of a set of twenty songs addressed to the first and second degrees of Class-Choir and Musical Training subjects in Musical Education. The chosen repertoire focuses solely on traditional Portuguese songs collected in several songbooks. As far as the general structure is concerned, the dissertation is divided into three chapters. Chapter I consists of an approach on the concepts of traditional music and popular music, clarifying the differences between both. In this chapter, we also try to expand the concept of Ethnomusicology and its importance in the collection of the traditional song. This way, we called upon some of the contributions made in this area in Portugal and in Europe. In Chapter II, we emphasize the works of some of the musicians and pedagogues like Michel Giacometti, Fernando Lopes-Graça, Edgar Willems e Zoltan Kodály, who have contributed to the collection of the traditional songs. In this chapter, we also refer to the importance of the Class Choir subject in the pupil‟s progress as a musician, to the importance of the voice as the main tool of the subject and to the importance of the Class Choir subject interconnection with the Musical Training subject. In Chapter III, we present 20 traditional songs and we analyze their musical, ethnographic and formal aspects. In strictly musical context, we emphasize the musical tonality, the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic structure as well as the musical form. As to the ethnological aspects, we mention the place, date of origin and the context of the songs. Regarding the formal aspects, we refer to the connection between the formal literary and formal musical aspects. Finally, we make a general and comparative study of the songs which allows us to prove that they are a pedagogical tool of great importance for the first and second degrees of Musical Vocational Education.
