Technological evolution has revolutionized the way business is conducted and created the need for companies to reconfigure their business models to meet the needs of the digital environment. As companies go through the digital transformation process, it becomes necessary to assess the current state of digital practices in companies and digital maturity models help in this assessment. As the applicability of digital maturity models in the services area, namely in the banking sector, is underdeveloped, this study aims to understand the relationship between digital maturity and business models in credit financial institutions in Portugal. To answer the research question, ““How can digital maturity be an enabler of new business models in credit financial institutions?”, a qualitative approach was used through three descriptive case studies, and the interview was used as a data collection tool, in order to analyze the digital business models and apply a digital maturity model in the banking sector in three credit financial institutions. The results suggest that technology, efficiency and customization are elements resulting from the digital transformation process in companies and that digital maturity is an enabler of new business models in the financial sector, i.e., through the level of digital maturity, companies can understand their strengths and weaknesses, and then redefine their business model, since it helps to define priorities and strategy.
