Abstract

The lack of research on music therapy (MT) in Portugal is associated with theinexistence of validated assessment instruments for the portuguese population; to date, theintervention has been evaluated by other therapists, with inherent inaccuracies in the use ofnon-specific scales. Consequently, there are no comparative studies between data collectedfrom music therapy scales with those from other related areas. Objective: to describe the validation of the Individual Music-Centered AssessmentProfile for Neurodevelopmental Disorders (IMCAP-ND) for the portuguese population, which assesses musical interaction, communication, cognition, perception and responsivenessin music therapy with users with neurodevelopmental disorders (PND). Bilingual evaluatorsparticipated in translation and adaptation, ensuring linguistic accuracy and cross-culturalcorrelation. Subsequently, data obtained with the portuguese version of IMCAP-ND wascompared with those from the Griffiths Mental Development Scales (GMDS). It wasintended to measure whether there was an additional beneficial value of IMCAP-ND inobtaining data for diagnosis, signaling difficulties in social communication and relationshipthat need support and the benefits of regular music therapy intervention in these domains(attention centered on sound receptions and joint attention, communicative turn taking, auditory perception / receptive communication, sensory integration, the quality of socialinteraction, entrainment and empathy). Methods: the validation of the IMCAP-ND was carried out from several quantitativestudies, with a sample of 179 participants, distributed among the various researches: 87 (I),58 (II), 5 (pilot study), 11 (III-A) and 18 children (III-B), 30 of which with neurotypicaldevelopment, 128 with PND, evaluated in MT but only attended conventional therapies and21 with PND and attended to weekly MT, in addition to conventional therapies. Thepsychometric properties of content, convergent, discriminant validity, inter and intra-observerreliability were analyzed. Results: The psychometric properties showed satisfactory results, excellent internalconsistency and good inter-observer reliability were obtained for the IMCAP-ND (ICC > .75,(κ) equivalent to “almost perfect” agreement in 63 of the 109 items of the 3 scales, Pearson'sr ranged between .7 and .9; α= .997) and there were significant results of weekly MT sessions in the dimensions of adaptation to musical-play (r= -.561; p= .001), focusing on sound receptions (r= -.551; p= , 001) and following musical elements to correspond to the therapist(r= -.547; p= .001).Conclusion: the results showed sensitivity, reliability and validity of the portuguese version of IMCAP-ND and demonstrated the benefits of music therapy assessment forchildren with PND, providing additional data for diagnosis and intervention. Futurerevalidation studies are recommended.
