Nursing as we know it today has come to be by going through several changes over time, some of which scientific, technological, organisational, but also in the way that nursing care is perceived by the general population and families. Given that nursing had to adapt to modernity, it is pressing to update the body of knowledge to effectively and security address the ever pressing demands of our society. This paper aims to critically, constructively, and introspectively demonstrate the path to develop skills in Medical-Surgical Specialised Nursing, which is a result of a body of internships in the Emergency services and Intensive care units with goals and tasks designed to that effect. In the course of this paper, High-flow nasal cannula is a focus point. It has become central in the path to develop the skills for this masters and specialisation, which is sustained by the evidence-based practice which has come to be known through a scoping review. In the scoping review there was an evaluation of the extension, variety, and nature of the literature on the befits of High-flow nasal cannula in treating the SARS-CoV-2 infection. The utilisation of respiratory support equipment by the nurse is to be highlighted, given that the nurse has skills to identify potentially complex situations and interview in a secure, effective, competent, and scientific manner, which results in securing quality and excellence in nursing care. The acquisition of competencies as a specialist nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing aims at developing a specific set of knowledge and competencies which should be put into the practice, allowing the nurse to develop new and updated behaviours and skills to the practice of nursing.
