This work was carried within the Master of Advanced Nursing. The research focused on the preparation of caregivers family members (CFM) in the hospital setting - an area with great relevance for Nursing. The study reported here is an exploratory one, which was conducted in two stages: first stage - a qualitative approach and second stage - a quantitative approach. On the first stage, we tried to explore the process of preparing CFM, in hospital setting, using observation and interviews. The main results indicate that there are factors, centered on the dependent person, that seem to have an influence on this preparation process, namely: the condition of the dependent, his/her destination after discharge and his/her feelings and emotions. The training process is also influenced by factors related to the CFM, for example: the ability to play a role, the needs felt by CFM, their provisions, feelings and emotions. Four areas were dominant in the preparation of CFM: the condition of the dependent, drugs management, domain of self-care feeding and prevention of complications. Nurses used predominantly an expositional strategy to prepare CFM. The second stage involved two hospitals, with a sample of 116 nurses. The goal was to identify nursing interventions more relevant and frequent in CFM preparation. A questionnaire was built for collecting these data. Concerning the regularity of the preparation we realized that only the areas of self-care: positioning, lifting, transfering and walking are very relevant and very common in the preparation of CFM. In terms of frequency, prevention of complications is also very frequent in the preparation of CFM.
