Abstract

Are indisputable advances in information technology and communication in a globalized world, and with them the information professional's role is to be the manager of the information units, falling to even treat all documents are received and produced by the organization. Given the rapidly changing files are fundamental sources of information on educational and cultural process of the citizen for the production of knowledge. But, to use that knowledge properly there must be a proper management and preservation of information and documentation. So the files need to be well organized, with adequate facilities to accommodate and preserve the documentation. However with emerging knowledge that is appearing every day and to be shared in social media, it becomes difficult the task of organizing and preserving this information. Repositories of multiple nature are fundamental to research and increase knowledge about the past or whether on the news. In this case study raises questions and identifies the preservation technologies that have Portuguese District Archives and seeks to explain their preservation policies. Yin (1994) argues that this approach fits the research when a researcher is confronted with complex situations, so that makes it difficult to identify the variables considered important when a researcher seeks answers to "how" and "why?”. The data collection method used is the questionnaire survey, administered to 18 district files with a very low response rate. The data collected, their processing and analysis is not conclusive or generalizable because it had a very limited number of responses in a way that naturally leads to a result inconclusive and incomplete and, indirectly, to an apparent low receptivity to the use of technologies or the capacity to open files outside of the technology across multiple channels.
