The Ordem dos Enfermeiros of Portugal acknowledges the Specialist Nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for People in Critical Situations Specialization with skills in providing specialized care for people in critical condition, in managing emergency, exception and catastrophe response, and in maximizing infection prevention and control and antimicrobials resistance, given the complexity of patients in critical condition. Among the shared skills of all specialist nurses is the ability to develop quality practices, managing and collaborating in continuous quality improvement programs and promoting a therapeutic and safe care environment, person centered, actively pursuing the creation of procedures that minimize risk and ensure safety of care. This document aims to showcase interventions intended to promote safety of care, under the continuous quality improvement standards, in a healthcare institution. In the Infection Control and Antimicrobial Resistance Department it was performed a review of the Clostridioides difficile infection precaution procedure. The proposal to change the procedure was based on a literature review conducted by the student that is described in this document. Secondly, it was developed a critically ill patient transport checklist and an effective communication handover template for the Emergency Department. In parallel, this document invites the reader to follow the critical-reflective exercise carried out by the student, highlighting the activities that contributed to the development of a specialized nursing practice centered on the person in a situation of critical illness and their vulnerability, and how promoting safety in care contributes to the protection of said person.
