The importance given to whistleblowers in crime fight and detection as become increasingly relevant and, for that reason, the legislation that regulates the protection of these people must be able to accompany that growth and answer the presented needs. Currently, the legal diplomas that aim to regulate the protection of the whistleblower, aren´t very complete or even similar across the countries of Europe, being Portugal, as most of the other nations, a country with a very low and fragile level of protection. On the other side, the United Kingdom stands out in a positive way, having a high consolidated protection. For that reason, it became necessary the creation of a figure that could regulate this theme and standardize the current legislation across many countries. It is in this context that emerges the 2019/1937 Directive that provides the protection to those who denunciate the violation of any EU laws. Therefore, it was intended to analyze this new directive with the purpose of figuring out what it brings new in relation to the more complete ruling diplomas in Europe. Besides, it was evident the necessity for the portuguese legislator to create a new law that regulates the protection of the whistleblower and be able to answer the demands of this new directive.
