This dissertation “A quantitative analysis of the impact of a company’s sustainability strategy on employee engagement” has been written by Alina Burghard in the Responsible Business seminar and explores the effects a sustainability strategy can have on employee engagement. Drawing upon literature from various disciplines, including corporate sustainability, employee engagement, organisational behaviour, and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, the study analyses the relationship between a company's sustainability initiatives and the level of engagement of its employees. The research employs a quantitative questionnaire with 412 survey respondents across industries and various age groups. The results indicated that a well-executed corporate sustainability strategy, a sense of purpose and meaningful work, positively impact employee engagement. Sustainability and sustainable business practices are by far the most appreciated commitments valued by employees. In addition to that, employees who are involved in sustainability-related activities and initiatives tend to feel more engaged and fulfilled at their work, which in turn are important prerequisites for greater job satisfaction, motivation, and productivity. The study also highlights a positive correlation between job fulfilment and a company’s positive impact on nature and society. Lastly, the thesis emphasises the importance of a well implemented sustainability strategy and a leading-by-example management style to maximise employee engagement. By providing practical insights and recommendations for managers, the findings may help organisations seeking to implement or improve sustainability practices and enhance employee engagement. Acknowledging that an effective sustainability strategy is crucial to ensure long-term company’s success.
