Abstract

Despite the rise of daytime talk-shows based on a host's identity on broadcast free-to-air channels in Portugal, the personae's power to affect the consumption of these programmes has not been studied. To address this gap, this dissertation looks at the role of para-social relations in the decision to watch A Nossa Tarde (RTP1), Júlia (SIC), and Goucha (TVI). In this study, the Explanatory Sequential Mixed method was used. A survey of 200 students from Portuguese Senior Universities who watch the understudied programs was carried out. Following its analysis with descriptive and exploratory factor analysis with factor rotation, the collected data was addressed in three focus group sessions by a group of 18 students. In addition, data were gathered through naturalistic direct observation over the course of two weeks of broadcast. The qualitative data was examined using qualitative content analysis. The study's participants have intense para-social relations with the hosts Tânia Ribas de Oliveira, Júlia Pinheiro, and Manuel Luís Goucha. The data indicates that para-social relations are employed as indirect factors of influence – they serve to build a perception about the channel where the programme is broadcast, but they do not drive the choosing process or decision-making in and of themselves. Nonetheless, when the television ecosystem changes, these linkages are revealed to be the sole deciding factor.
