This report seeks to fulfil the final stage towards the conclusion of the Curricular Unit “Final Internship and Report” of the Master’s Degree Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for Individuals in Critical Care, administered by the Portuguese Catholic University. It describes the process of individual competence development: the objectives and the competences that were outlined in the internship project, as well as the strategies used. In parallel, a critical analysis is made on the implementation and development of the competencies in the contexts where they were carried out: an Intensive Care Unit and an Accident and Emergency Department. In these scenarios, competences were developed through the provision of specialised nursing care to individuals in critical situations as well as their families. The document is divided into chapters, which reflect the path taken through the “joining” of synergies between theory and practice, in the requirements demanded for the acquisition of competences for the specialised practice. Thus, the first chapter presents a conceptual review - Therapeutic touch in nursing care: a conceptual analysis. This has the objective of analysing the concept of therapeutic touch in nursing care under Rodgers’ evolutionary vision. It concludes that therapeutic touch is implicit in the professional practice of nurses, requiring a concrete and unique adjustment to the circumstances and real needs of the individual, so as to provide a comforting practice. Study submitted and accepted for publication. The second chapter provides more details of the completed internship plan and the activities undertaken, including participation in the 3rd International Seminar of the Master’s Degree in Nursing, (Lisbon), with the presentation of the Poster entitled “Therapeutic touch in nursing care: an integrated literature review”, which obtained an Honourable Mention. As strategies for disseminating results, it used informal training and a short video on the WhatsApp social network, which was accessed by the nursing teams providing the clinical teaching. Furthermore, there was the creation of an interactive poster for participation in the 2nd International Symposium on Evidence-Based Health Care - Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Coimbra, on the theme “Therapeutic touch: autonomous nursing intervention”. In regard to opportunities sought, the theme “Suture Threads” was created, to fill needs felt by the nursing team in the Accident and Emergency Department, as a strategy for the improvement and safety of practices. The third chapter presents a critical reflection on the course taken. Finally, the final conclusion of the clinical teachings, where 10 the importance of these is highlighted, regarding changes in one’s existence as a person and a professional.
