Introduction: The craniofacial development can provoke changes leading to dental malocclusion which, in turn, may cause a malposition between the position of centric relation and the maximum intercuspidation. All those factors can contribute to the development of a temporomandibular joint disorder (TJD). Aim: To seek a relationship between malocclusion and TJD and their relationship with age and genre. Materials and methods: This study is a cross-section study. Each participant was observed by the main investigator who collected data through the analysis of orthodontic casts, through the cephalometric analysis of Ricketts, WITS, and Steiner, as well as through questionnaires, specifically through the adapted Fonseca questionnaire and through the RDC/DTM. The SPPS® was used in the statistical analysis of the data with a threshold of statistical significance of 5,0%. Results: Given the types of malocclusion of the study, the Ricketts analysis (p=0,049), the WITS analysis (p=0,014) and the Steiner analysis (p=0,005), demonstrated a dependence relationship with the Group II of right TMJ of the axis I of the RDC/DTM, the Ricketts cephalometric analysis (p=0,046) and the mandibular discrepancy (p=0,019) demonstrated a statistically significant association with the Group III of the left TMJ of the axis I of the RDC/DTM. When analysing the age some dependence relationships were found between age and the facial biotype (ρ=0,043), the left molar relationship (p=0,004), the left canine relationship (p=0,023), the Group I of the axis I of the RDC/DTM (p=0,001) and the Group III of the left TMJ of the axis I of the RDC/TMD (p=0,026). Finally, the facial biotype and the Group II of the left TMJ of the axis I of the RDC/DTM demonstrated a statistical relevance when compared (p=0,040). Conclusion: It can be seen statistically relevant in some cases; however, these results do not reflect all the Portuguese population hence the importance of further studies in a broader sample of people to harvest stronger conclusions.
