Abstract

This study aims to investigate on how the organizational commitment is related to the practice of career management, in elder workers of the secondary sector. The relevance of this study is due to the fact that the career management is usually thought and developed for young or middle-aged workers, leaving the importance for the older workers a bit behind. A survey derived from Ascensão instrument (2009) was applied, with the goal of evaluating the practice of career management in companies and also Bruno instrument (2007), which was based on Meyer e Allen (1990) model, to evaluate the organizational commitment. The results suggest that there is a positive association between the affective commitment and the practice of career management. Furthermore, there is a significant difference in commitment as far as the seniority or time inside the organization is concerned, after working three or more years inside the organization, workers get an affective commitment; while working one year or less, their commitment is continuance. The results consolidate the importance of the practices of career management for the commitment of the senior workers.
