Abstract

Television has always been a privileged medium for the consumption of information and
entertainment, enjoying enormous popularity all over the world. Even today its centrality
in the portuguese media ecosystem is confirmed. However, not all people consume it
massively. Although television is a powerful and dominant medium, there are people who
resist it. In this sense, the aim is to study television resistance, which consists of its nonuse,
or rather, its non-consumption or moderate or selective consumption. Following a
theoretical framework on the reception of technological devices, the new communication
environment and the non-use and non-users of media, the goal is to understand what television
resistance is, how it manifests itself and what motivates it. Through an online survey
and focus groups to those who don´t watch or watch little television content, in order to
deeply understand the participants' relationship with television, we arrive and distinct
three types: the disinterested, the resistant and the disillusioned.
