A responsabilidade civil decorrente de acidentes causados por veículos autónomos

Abstract

We are living the advent of a new era marked by the digital transformation of the world as we know it. Autonomous vehicles are a manifestation of this transformation, and are no longer a science fiction dream, but an imminent reality. With the advent of autonomous vehicles, the Law has a fundamental task: to regulate this technology, ensuring that the best possible use is made of it, in order to generate the necessary confidence to promote its use. This is closely linked to the liability for damage that can be caused by these autonomous vehicles. With this paper we consider how the current civil liability system is prepared to cover liability arising from an accident caused by an autonomous vehicle, exploring the various grounds of liability that the Portuguese legal system establishes.
