Abstract

Online marketplaces have a crucial role in business-to-consumer relationships. While consumers have access to a greater variety of goods and services, businesses have the opportunity to reach more consumers and therefore expand their business. These conditions make consumer protection a major concern in the context of those relationships. With that in mind, this master’s thesis approach is based on the liability of online marketplaces providers. To do so, we carry out an analysis on the evolution of the European Union's response to the emergence of online marketplaces and also make considerations regarding the liability of online marketplaces providers within the legislation on the purchase and sale of consumer goods in Portugal. Therefore, the aim of this work is to analyze and consider whether the European Union and Portugal are prepared to protect the consumer’s position within the rise of online marketplaces and whether they are prepared to respond to the new challenges they might pose.
