Abstract

Burnout is a state of exhaustion in which the afflicted grows cynical regarding their real worth and skeptical regarding their professional abilities. This state, which results from disruptive relationships the individuals establish with themselves as well as their social and organizational settings, can negatively influence the workers by reducing their personal fulfillment and through phenomena of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, resulting in the development of several somatic, cognitive, emotional and social symptoms.
Given that burnout is particularly effective among professions that place the workers in direct contact with people, with teachers being one of those professions, this dissertation aims to analyze, through meta-analytic methods, several studies conducted among the Portuguese population within the last decade. Despite results showcasing the prevalence of low to medium values of burnout among the population, the gradual growth of these values and the existence of enough risk factors to potentially maximize the development of burnout symptomatology allow the conclusion that development of further approaches in the consideration and treatment of burnout syndrome is especially pertinent.
