A segurança do doente e o respeito pela vulnerabilidade como caminho para a excelência do cuidar

Abstract

This report reflects the course of learning and acquisition of competences verified during the period of internship recommended for the Master course in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing of the School of Nursing (Porto), Institute of Health Sciences, Universidade Católica Portuguesa. And concerns two Stage Modules carried out in a Local Health Unit, demonstrating at the same time the acquisition of skills in the context of the critically ill patient. Module I was developed in the context of Emergency Department, Module II was credited and Module III carried out in Healthcare Infection Control and Prevention. Through a critical approach to the acquisition of competencies, it’s described, objectively and through the valuation of an autonomous nursing practice, the realization of projects and actions that can lead to a substantial improvement in the delivery of health care to the hospitalized patient. Through the formulation and development of an innovative reference project that bridges community and emergergency department, the dignity of the human being was valued by the respect for vulnerability. It has demonstrated the importance of the activity of the Specialist Nurse as an aggregator and proactive agent in the development of projects aimed to improve the management of health services by the timely reference of potentially problematic situations that can pronounce the overcrowding of emergency services. The importance of the informal caregiver's burden as a problem that goes beyond the community barrier and is unequivocally installed in emergency services, with the urgent need to demonstrate this problem, was a highlight in the report. The responsible professional practice demonstrated by the reflection and critical analysis of the ethical issues found in the context of the practice, namely the visiting hours in the emergency department, is reflected in this work The demonstration that patient safety is the epithet of the healthcare infection control and prevention was obtained during the development of the practice in the Infection Control and Antimicrobial Resistance Department. Through an action in the field of Best Practice Recommendations on Healthcare Infection Control, it was possible to concentrate aspects of training, improving quality of care and research. At the same time, the construct for the improvement in the patient safety managment was obtained by the demonstration of need for changes in the Institutional Norms The acquisition of knowledge in such areas as the Epidemiological Surveillance of healthcare associated infections led me to the reflection on the fields of action of the Specialist Nurse and the importance of their activity. The Master has allowed the development of competencies reflected not only in the performance of activities but also in the awareness that the professional development will always be based on the nurse’s ability to update, seek and deepen knowledge. It was the driver that made reflect on the professional activity and on how it is possible to build a research path that provides the advance of health care and especially nursing care.
