Abstract

This report introduces the complex interaction between technological progress, economic security and national development, based on a unique perspective acquired during my internship at the Portuguese Embassy in Seoul, South Korea. It investigates South Korea's commitment to technological innovation and research and development (R&D), exploring strategic investments in key sectors such as semiconductors, while revealing the country's pursuit of technological leadership, essential to its economic and national security strategy. The report also investigates South Korea's initiatives in the defence sector, where technology is harnessed to modernize its military capabilities and improve its global position - the data collected points to a techno-nationalist trend. Throughout the report, the analysis highlights the symbiotic relationship between technological progress and economic security, portraying South Korea as an example of the pursuit of national development through technological innovation.
