A sucessão nas empresas familiares
: uma questão de mérito ou de nepotismo?

Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate to what extent the choice of a successor in a family business is a matter of merit or nepotism. We have sought to determine the characteristics that are looked for in a successor, as well as if this search is done only at family level or if it is open to outsiders.
Data collection was carried out through the preparation of a questionnaire for family businesses.
The results show the technical capacity to perform as the most significant attribute to the choice of successor. Belonging to the family is appointed as a secondary aspect by the heads of the family business, but we found that in over 80% of cases, all the candidates belong to the family.
We also had the opportunity to verify that the male gender remains prevalent in
candidates for leadership. In the sample, we have 100 male candidates and 37 female candidates.
