This report describes activities, critically analyzes and reflects the route taken at the Masters in Nursing specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in 2011/2012, the Institute of Health Sciences - Catholic University of Portugal (UCP-ICS). The curriculum builds on basic skill development of specialist nurse, and these are described in the General Regulations of the Master of Nursing of a professional nature. For the development of skills performed two modules in the emergency department (ED) and Infection Control Committee (ICC). The module Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been credited for my work experience in this area five years from the date of delivery of the report. The cross-sectional area of my journey is Autonomous Decision Making in Nursing and my goal was to mobilize this area carried out in stages. Autonomy in Nursing is considered central to the professionalization of nursing, which stands out from other professions in the health area, with a specific body of knowledge. But is that nurses contribute to give visibility to their activities and demonstrate how the outcomes in the health / disease of the customer to the institution and society? Throughout the stages it was possible to mobilize this cross-sectional area through studies of nursing records of compliance and auditing practices, bearing in mind the need to sensitize professionals to give visibility to your practice, not only as a precursor to their professional identity, but well as development for the excellence of care. In the ED realized a poster with the algorithm of Advanced Life Support (ALS), training on nursing care to the client with Noninvasive Ventilation (NIV) and awareness sessions with the results of the compliance of registered nursing. In the CCI performed an audit of the practice of isolation by transmitting, a report with the statistics of this audit, a procedure for the prevention of UTI (urinary tract infection) associated with the insertion and maintenance of urinary devices, training sessions on Handwashing Campaign and holding posters in all the institution with the results of this campaign. In developing this report, we describe the goals set and achieved through activities that allowed the development of skills as a nurse specialist.
