Abstract

Jealousy is a very common emotion, mostly present in romantic relationships; Previous studies have found relationships between this and the dark triad (consisting of three personality characteristics: psychopathy, narcissism and machiavellianism). However, embitterment is a concept recently approached by psychology, with little literature and none that relate it to romantic jealousy or to the dark triad, which makes this investigation relevant to the scientific field. Objective: explore the relationships between romantic jealousy, the dark triad and embitterment. Methodology: this investigation is a descriptive correlational and cross sectional study, using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Multidimensional Jealousy Scale, The Short Dark Triad Scale and the Post Traumattic Embitterment Disorder Scale, which will be applied to a sample of Portuguese nationality individuals over the age of eighteen. Results: A correlation was found between the three dimensions of the dark triad and the cognitive and behavioral components of romantic jealousy, but not a correlation between the narcissism of the dark triad and the emotional component of romantic jealousy. Also a correlation between romantic jealousy and embitterment was found. Regarding the differences between genders, females had higher levels of jealousy and males had higher levels on the dark triad characteristics.
