Abstract

In any activity of man is impossible not to communicate and in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities in which nursing takes place, such activity is of great importance and it is expected that the same requirement that is applied to the symptomatic control is also the aspect of communication and, in particular, in the transmission of bad news. The research carried out indicate that enable the communication of bad news by nurses has been a little explored area in terms investigational justifying the relevance of the study. Therefore, the aim of this research was to explore the impact that the transmission of bad news has on nurses. The research is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory nurses and carers direct service to the patient's Medical Hospital Egas Moniz, the target population. The population sample (non-probability) is represented by ten nurses. Given the objectives of the work it was considered appropriate to resort to partially structured interviews to collect data the latter has been organized according to the communication model Buckman and literature review performed. The content analysis technique was used for data processing. The results indicate that there is a diversity of feelings experienced by nurses during the process of breaking bad news being referred to as impotence followed by impatience and frustration. When watching the suffering and pain of the families the nurse refers pity, not wanting to cover it with negativity, but in the sense of understanding that that ill and that family going through a difficult period and deserve all the attention and help. The contact with the other members of the team is looking for a structured sharing common goals and giving meaning to the definition of teamwork
