This dissertation aims to analyse the extent to which the static nature of the professional career, provided for in the Labour Code, is adequate to protect the legal position of the employee in the context of employment relationships. In particular, it is vital to comprehend the prohibition on the employer to make the employee regress in category within the company to which he is linked, as well as finding out if there is any provision of the employee's right to progress in his/her professional career. To this end, it proved essential to study the basis of the static nature of the career, specifically the cases in which exceptions to it are allowed; as well as the increasingly frequent reality of the issue in question being provided for in collective bargaining agreements.
