Abstract

Along with the changes suffered by television, the television genres began a process of merger, which resulted in the creation of new genres, such as Reality Television, which combines the documentary genre and the entertainment. The reality television came to answer the spectator’s “voyeur” needs, whose primary need is to observe ordinary people exposed on a television programme. As the audience measurement is representative of the Portuguese population, we consider it to be the best way in order to obtain conclusions about the interests and atention of the viewers. This premise provides us motive of attention and study, after an approach to three distinct, but connected areas: the international and Portuguese history of television, the growth of Reality Television and the evolution of audience measurement in Portugal. Therefore, and after the consolidation of these studied areas, we decided to analyse the programme Secret Story – Casa dos Segredos 5, in order to verify, indeed, which are the factors that induce the variation of the audience values, positive or negative, in this specifc reality show. The programme’s choice for analysis fell over the fact that it is a reality gameshow that keeps the audience values high, despite the variations observed. Thus, we understand that the positive variations enthusiasms the viewer to keep watching the programme provided by the so called ordinary people. In the other hand, the negative variations are a synonym of channel change and loss of interest.
