This report comes under the module “Final Placement and Report”, part of the Masters degree in Medical and Surgical Nursing of the critically ill patient. Its aim is to assess the learning pathway to acquire the competences of a Specialist Nurse. This was developed based on clinical practice in an Emergency Department and out of hospital emergency. In this essay we tried to demonstrate planned and accomplished goals, describe developed activities and acquired competences, using a critical-reflective vision to demonstrate the pathway taken. This essay was done based on the most recent scientific evidence to support the decision-making process. A descriptive-reflective methodology was used. As a foundation for this essay, the aims of the module, the placement project with personal goals and the projects done throughout were taken into account. Based on the assessment of the learning process and previously acquired competences, the contextualization of the clinical sites, the process of acquiring specific competences and a global assessment of the learning pathway and main implications for the professional practice and personal and academical growth. Through the development of a critical reflection and intervention in the team about the role of the family of the patient in an emergency department to understand its importance and translate that into quality and humanisation of the care provided. The collection and analysis of data, as well as the perception of the lack of information about this subject, and also the infection control led to reflection and monitoring throughout the placement, attempting to improve the quality of the care, starting from an identified need. An integrative review was also carried out about the presence of the family in an out of hospital cardiac arrest with the aim of understanding the importance of their presence. Professional practice focused on ethics, deontology, communication and therapeutical relationship is also reflected in this essay. The main contributions to the growth as a Specialist Nurse refer to the capacity of reflection and management in the provision of care, the implementation of actions based on the most recent evidence and the humanization of care. Therefore, it is possible to understand the importance of research for improvement of the nursing care and development of the profession by more trained and updated nurses.
