The present work intent to describe the course realized during the stage in Centro Hospitalar Entre o Douro e Vouga E.P.E. (unidade Santa Maria da Feira), from 27 April 2011, till February 4th 2012, describing the activities realized in three components (urgency service, intensive care unit and control of hospital infection), which allowed to acquire and develop the competence as Nurse Specialist Medical-Surgical Nursing, essential for a quality approach to a critical patient. The critical patient presents risk or even failure of one or more vital functions, so, their survival depends on advanced means of surveillance, monitoring and therapy. The nursing approach to this kind of patients requires a level of knowledge and specifics competences that the Nurse Specialist Medical-Surgical Nursing has. These, by providing qualified and intensive care, allow the maintenance of basic functions of life, prevent complications and limit disabilities, for the total patient recovery. Along the stage it was possible to verify the importance of the competences of these professionals, for a structured and efficient response to the patient in critical condition and acquisition/ development of many of these competences. During the stage, the activities were realized and were done in an autonomous way and worked in team, all together. The constant search of scientific an up-to-data knowledge, allowed the development of my decision making, essential for a good practice of nursing. In short, the period of the stage in urgency service and intensive care unit allowed the development/ acquisition of competences which allow me take care of the patients in emergent situation, anticipating the instability of the risk of organ failure, managing pain, the patient well-being, the administration of the therapeutic protocol and interpersonal communication with patient and family. The period of the stage in the infection control committee, allowed the development of competence at the area, which will be of great importance to do the best and prevent the infection control before the person in a critical condition, attending to the situation and need of answers in real time. Along the stage important jobs were developed to improve the best quality of service and nurse care to approach adult and senior patients with severe disease and in critical condition. The Master´s degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, allowed my personal and professional development, very important for the improvement of my work when providing nursing care to the critical patients.
