This report was elaborated within the Masters Course in Nursing with Medical Surgical Nursing Specialization, of the Institute of Health Sciences of Lisbon, of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. It documents the progress carried out and shows the main outcomes of the internships, which allowed the acquisition and development of skills within the masters degree in medical-surgical nursing and specialist nurse in critical care. The first internship, regarding Module I, took place in a Multipurpose Emergency Department and the one regarding Module II, in a Multipurpose Intensive Care Unit. The one corresponding to Module III, which was optional, was held in an Operating Room. This choice was driven by my personal, academic and professional interests. The Emergency Service internship provided a first specialized contact with the patient in critical condition, especially in an urgent/critical action. The operating room proved to be essential to perform specialized techniques and to provide care for ventilated patients, under anaesthetic medication, both so important in this context. Finally, in the intensive care internship, I was surrounded by a highly technological environment, which not only guaranteed my attentive monitoring and vigilance of these patients, but also the prevention of instabilities, which are common among them. Due to their specificity and complementarity, all internships were a valuable contribution to the development and acquisition of technical, scientific, ethical and relational skills, thus showing their irreplaceable importance. In fact, they allowed me to take care of the patient in an urgent and critical situation, by anticipating the instability and risk of organic failure, by managing pain, well-being, the administration of therapeutic protocols and the interpersonal communication with patients and families. The main objectives of this report are to present my learning process and the activities carried out in order to achieve the previously defined aims, through the analysis and critical reflection of encountered experiences, problem situations and their interventions, in the process of acquiring specialized skills, to provide highly specialized nursing care, in order to achieve an increase in the quality of the provided health care to critically ill patients and families.
