Abstract

Individuals with Right Hemisphere Lesion (RHL) can present communicative deficits, mainly related with lexical-semantic, prosodic pragmatic-inferential and/or discursive processing. In the meantime, there is an insufficiency regarding the assessment tools of communication that are properly validated and adapted, to the Portuguese socio-cultural-linguistics. The goals of this study were: 1) neuro-psycholinguistics adaptation of the Bateria Montreal de Avaliação de Comunicação - Bateria MAC-BR - to the Portuguese social cultural reality - Bateria MAC-PT (Part 1) and, 2) to determine the effect of the variables age and education in the performance of healthy adults in the Bateria MAC-PT (Part 2). Part 1 involved six steps: 1) comparative analyses in Bateria MAC-BR to its original Canadian version; 2) adaptation and development of new stimuli by specialists; 3) analysis by non-expert judges, 4) analysis by expert judges; 5) pilot Study 1 (n=10); e 6) pilot Study 2 (n=30) as well as inter-rater agreement. Study 2 was composed by 90 individuals, divided in nine groups according to education (4 to 9; 10 to 13; and over 13 years) and age (19 to 40; 41 to 64; and 65 to 80 years). For comparison analysis between groups it was used the two-way test ANOVA, with post hoc Bonferroni (p≤0.05). Part 1 allowed a proper adaptation of the Bateria MAC-BR to the social-cultural and linguistic Portuguese reality. In Part 2 it was found that the variable Age influenced subjects’ performance in pragmatic-inferential, discursive and prosodic tasks. As for the variable education it influenced the performance in all processes evaluated by Bateria MAC-PT. This work was able to adapt a clinical usefull tool for the assessment of the communication concerning the four processes examined by MAC-PT. Furthermore, the variables showed that age and education influenced the communicative performance and should be considered in the evaluation process of neurological patients
