Abstract

The establishment of relationships is something common throughout the development of the human being and there are different kinds of relationships: family, work, love, etc. This study has as its primary goal the study of the relation between breakup distress, relationship closeness and infidelity. Besides this goal, there were established specific goals such as to adapt and validate the Breakup Distress Scale, the Unidimensional Relationship Closeness Scale and the Attitudes Toward Relationship Infidelity Scale to a sample of the Portuguese population; analyze and correlate the scales with the sociodemographic variables; analyze the relation between the scales and identify a model in which the three constructs under study are related. The investigation protocol was shared in the investigators’ social media and via email for students from different faculties. The sample consisted of 322 participants between 16 and 62 years of age. More than 80% are females and 299 participants have been in a relationship. The results showed good models of adjustment for the questionnaires used towards the sample of this study. The results state that less positives attitudes towards infidelity mean less breakup distress and that the breakup distress increases with how close the relationship was.
