Abstract

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been recognized as one of the most common chronic conditions in the pediatric population, having a significant impact on the life not only of the sick person but also in the whole family. The parental and familiar system should correspond to the requirements of the illness, that is, changing, if necessary, the routines of the family. Recognizing the role of the familiar system in controlling the chronic condition, the interest in understanding how families adapt has been enhanced, considering positive indicators. The present study aims to explore the contribution of the familiar and parental system resources, in the context of pediatric diabetes. Namely, the parental self-regulation ,the family protective factors and management condition in the adaptability to type 1 diabetes, in families with adolescents with this condition. 131 teens with type 1 diabetes parents/caregivers participated in this study by completing questionnaires to measure parental self-regulation, family resilience factors, management condition, as well as the well-being and the function of the family. Sociodemographic and clinical data have also been gathered. The results verified the importance of the familiar and the parental resources, in the family's well-being and functioning. The parental selfregulation and the ability to manage the condition have especially shown to be predictors, both showing contribute to the way family responds to the challenges. Regarding wellbeing, no variable has shown a significant effect. The difficulties of the familiar life and the ability to managing the condition were partial mediators in the relationship between
parental and family resources, and family well-being and functioning. Therefore, it is clear the importance of the role of family and the parental system in the promotion of families' adaptability with adolescents with this chronic condition.
