Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Differentiation of Self Scale - Revised (DSS-R), which assesses the Differentiation of Self in adults. The sample consisted of 132 Portuguese adults, of whom 108 were female and 24 male. The DSS-R assesses five dimensions: Position of the Self, Emotional Reactivity, Fusion with Others, Emotional Cut-off and Dominance over Others. Descriptive analyses were carried out, followed by exploratory factor analysis (maximum likelihood method, with Oblimin rotation), as well as an assessment of the instrument's reliability, through internal consistency. Convergent and divergent validity were examined on the basis of correlations with the Basic Family Relations Questionnaire (CERFB) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y), respectively. The results showed good internal consistency, evidence of factorial validity and significant correlations, supporting the use of the DSS-R in research contexts with the Portuguese population.
