The number of teachers showing signs of psychological distress has increased, which in turn may lead to significant implications for the well-being and individual quality of life of each professional. Therefore, it is necessary to explore and identify factors that may be affecting teachers' health. The present study investigated the psychological adaptation of primary and secondary school teachers in the context of growing dissatisfaction with the teaching career in Portugal, with the aim of understanding the possible consequences of psychological distress on teachers' physical health and the differences between the public and private sectors. Furthermore, the study seeks to identify factors that may influence teachers' well-being and quality of life. The sample consisted of 213 participants, of which 40 belonged to private education and 173 to public education. Participants responded to questionnaires assessing psychological adaptation (including quality of life, subjective well-being, levels of anxiety and depression, perception of somatic and physical and mental health symptoms) and demographic and socioprofessional factors (such as gender, years of service, satisfaction with colleagues, and number of roles). The results revealed a positive correlation between satisfaction with colleagues and teachers' psychological adaptation, as well as a mediating role of health in this process. No significant differences were found between the two sectors. In conclusion, this study contributed to the understanding of potential factors that may influence teachers' psychological adaptation. These findings also highlight the importance of implementing programs in schools that promote cohesion among teachers.
