Verbal Communication is a life constant for any clinical dentist. It is through it that we can establish a lasting and effective doctor-patient relationship, growing the confidence each individual has placed in us, not only seeking medical care but also our professional advice. This dissertation sought to define the essential components of Verbal Communication, as well as its importance in the communicative interaction in the context of consultation in Dentistry. To this end, it was initially approached the concept of Communication in a broad perspective, before embarking on this particular branch, followed by the presentation of the results obtained by video recording of ten consultations in the Clínica Dentária Universitária, from the Centro Regional das Beiras – Universidade Católica Portuguesa, as well as the application of a short questionnaire to the patients involved. Finally, the results were discussed, and were withdrew the possible conclusions from this particular study. Analyzing the results, it was found that there are no overall differences between gender and course year attended by the students, and as well as what regards the course area. All students used a correct language record (common language), although it was not always appropriate to the patient in question (use of technical vocabulary indiscriminately). On the other hand, and generally, the Sinclair and Coulthard’s model is respected, being the students responsible for the majority of Initiations and patients by Responses, both sharing the acts of Negotiation and Evaluation. Finally, regarding to the data collected through the questionnaires, we concluded that patients are not fully aware of the mechanisms involved in the verbal communicative process. While it is undeniably a major competence, especially in the Healthcare area, Communication is a component often neglected and considered secondary. Thus, it is pertinent the institution of academic disciplines in the mandatory academic course that allow students to get in touch with the basic concepts of Communication, as well as to develop their communicative skills
