Abstract

The world's energy supply is based on fossil fuels. However, given its drawbacks, there is a global energy transition effort to limit global temperature rise to 2°C. The transport sector is among the most polluting, emitting about 20% of carbon dioxide emissions. Hydrogen is an attractive alternative to fossil fuels that can be used for both mobility, electricity production, among others. Fuel cell technology emerges as a leading alternative to internal combustion engines. However, and despite the great potential for the use of hydrogen in mobility in Portugal, it is possible to verify a near absence of this market that puts Portugal in a position of backwardness compared to other countries. Given their benefits and potential, what are the factors that explain the low presence of fuel cell vehicles in the Portuguese market? What is the most appropriate way to boost this market and thus derive the benefits that can come from it? Therefore, the objective of this research is to study what are the explanatory factors of low hydrogen adherence in mobility in Portugal. The analysis of the problem was developed by conducting interviews with professionals in the field of hydrogen and, subsequently, analyzing the content of the interviews in the light of a qualitative methodology. Thus, a series of explanatory factors were obtained for the low adherence to hydrogen in mobility in Portugal and also a set of measures proposed for its potentiation.
