Abstract

Circular Economy (CE) has emerged as a solution to the current problems and challenges regarding product scarcity, growing pollution and the unsustainability of the production systems adopted to date. CE represents an alternative to the linear model, based on circular principles that aim to change the way we produce and the way we use materials, turning today's "waste" into tomorrow's raw materials. CE is a restorative production system that seeks to minimize the existing dependence on nature by reducing the extraction of raw materials and decreasing the creation of waste, proposing a paradigm shift towards sustainable development. Given that there is a small number of studies in Portugal, this master's thesis has as main objective to clarify how companies from the retail sector in Portugal, adopt CE initiatives. This is a study from a qualitative perspective, using as method of data collection public information available online, with the complement of scientific articles found. We analyzed 10 retail companies operating in Portugal, with the objective of understanding which CE initiatives are being adopted by them. This study allowed us to conclude that companies in the retail sector, in Portugal, are already adopting CE, through the adoption of circular initiatives. These initiatives are based on recycling, recovery, reuse and remanufacturing of products, as well as rethinking the way they produce and sell.
