Abstract

This work corresponds to a thesis presented to the Portuguese Catholic University, Faculty of Education and Psychology for achieving the Degree of Master in Education Sciences – specialization in Social Pedagogy entitled to «Literacy, a requirement for democracy: The case Trofa Comunidade de Aprendentes (TCA)». The research process followed the main purpose of inquiring about the practices of adult literacy in the context of the dynamics of lifelong learning «in and with life». In conceptual terms, this research lies in the theoretical field of Social Pedagogy, understood as a science education that fits the various dimensions of lifelong learning, developed from the perspective of social citizenship (Azevedo, 2009; Baptista, 2008, 2009). The date collected during the course of research took place during the years of 2010 and 2011 based on the community dynamics of « Trofa Comunidade de Aprendentes » (TCA) and allowed us to highlight the practices of adult education developed in the context of community solidarity and democracy.
