Food waste generated by the retail sector is a relatively small fraction of the total food waste produced along the supply chain. However, due to their close connection with other stages of the chain, the role of retailers is crucial in influencing food waste behaviors and bringing about significant reductions. For the implementation of food waste reduction practices, it is critical to understand the factors that can positively or negatively influence their performance. However, the analysis of these factors rarely involves the participation of management, although their participation can be valuable in identifying critical points and contributing to the prevention of this problem. The main objective of this dissertation is to understand the level of alignment between strategy and practices in relation to food waste. For this, a qualitative approach was chosen through a case study carried out at Pingo Doce, where interviews were conducted with members of management, complemented by other qualitative methods. Throughout the work the food waste reduction practices and the main factors influencing their implementation were identified. Considering the objective proposed in this study, it is concluded that although alignment exists, integrated and technological solutions need to be adopted, as well as the integration of more flexible policies.
