Abstract

The city of Porto is the center of a highly industrialized region, it is also the focus of public, commercial and cultural life. In the past, transport policy was focused primarily on the extension of road capacity, but nowadays the importance of intelligent urban mobility is increasingly being recognized. This work aims to improve intelligent urban mobility of people in the city of Porto through innovation in the field of land transport based on the CIVITAS initiative. The CIVITAS community initiative translates into the «Cities for Cities», program which supports research and demonstration actions in European cities committed to the implementation and integration of sustainable urban mobility measures. A benchmarking analysis was carried out between successful cases of the CIVITAS initiative and the city of Porto. These cases were analysed by several interviewees who expressed their opinion regarding the adaptability of the measures inserted in the CIVITAS cities to the city of Porto and its potential for success. The study carried out demonstrated opportunities for improvement in urban mobility in the city of Porto, specifically measures that have the potential to reduce the release of greenhouse gases through the analysis of the Bologna case, as well as potential incentives for use of bicycles and walking stimulation through Gent's case. There were also possible solutions to improve accessibility that were identified using the Iasi case as an example and finally a new strategy was identified to decongest traffic within the city through a parking management in Utrecht, which could be replicable in Porto. The exchange of knowledge and experiences between cities is a practice that has already proven its potential, Porto should enjoy his partnership with the other CIVITAS cities, in order to improve urban mobility and therefore improve the quality of life for its citizens and be a environmentally sustainable city.
