Abstract

“The privatization process is the transition of the ownership of institutions that produce goods or services of the public sector - Central State, regional and local authorities - to the private sector” (Leite Viegas 1996). This research has as its main objective a study of the effects of privatization in the banking sector in Portugal. This has been done by using and verifying changes in financial statements and ratios of a sample of Portuguese banks before the process of privatization in 1989, and after the privatization between 1997-1999. There were notable increases in the balance sheet, such as in their assets especially the Customers Credit, in their liabilities such the Funds Raised, and in their equity. It is worth noting the decrease or the solvency ratio for banks in the analysis or, for comparative reasons, for foreign banks in Portugal and the total banking sector. Regarding profitability ratios, also of note is an increase in the return on equity (ROE)
in the sample of Portuguese banks as will be demonstrated in the results. The results reflect the entire process of privatization of the banking sector and its analysis, and include the increases and capital subscriptions during the privatization
process.
