Abstract

The retail sector is currently going through several challenges, namely the financial crisis in Europe, which has lead to a reduction in purchasing power. As such, efficiency is critical for enterprises that not only wish to survive the crisis, but also grow and expand in a way that creates competitive advantages. Thus comes the understanding that the evaluation of efficiency has an important role in overcoming these challenges.
Although still underutilized in the retail sector, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has become a widely utilized tool assisting managers in the decision making process. Thus, this thesis describes a method of performance evaluation in retail shops based on the DEA method. The objective of this study is to contribute to the improvement organizational performance. To be able to guarantee that the methods utilized and the conclusions reached are viable and applicable in the field, it’s important to use a case study, in this case Parfois, a important Portuguese retail store, specialized in the sale of fashion accessories. We will analyze the efficiency of 63 of the company’s stores, in Portugal, utilizing information
gathered during an internship at Parfois between the months of October 2011 and March 2012, and using the DEA method.
Firstly, the company will be described, followed by a literature review of the subject, applying the DEA method to the Parfois stores. Then, some of the factors potentially affecting the efficiency of Parfois stores will also be analyzed.
In this way, we wish that the analysis developed in this paper will serve as a support tool to the management of Parfois stores in a national level and help the company, with the identification of areas of potential growth, to define objectives to increase its performance and achieve excellence.
