Abstract

Introduction: The oral cavity can present several pathologies, either from soft or hard tissues. Although noninvasive diagnostic methods may be necessary for a clinical diagnosis, a biopsy is the most reliable diagnostic tool. In Portugal, studies on the prevalence of oral pathology based on histological diagnosis are uncommon, and so there is a lack of information to characterize the population at this level. Objectives: To characterize the biopsies performed at the Universitary Dental Clinic of the Portuguese Catholic University; to analyze the concordance between clinical and histological diagnoses; and to determine the prevalence of malignant neoplasms. Methodology: Retrospective analysis of 117 biopsies referring to 97 patients. Patients were characterized as to their age and gender, and biopsies as to the type of biopsy, site of collection, clinical diagnosis and anatomopathological diagnosis. The registered diagnoses were then grouped by pathology group. A descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed considering the variables under analysis. Results: The mean age of the studied population was 52 years, and the most affected range was 60-70 years. The most affected gender was female, representing 52% of the sample. The most accomplished type of biopsy was excisional biopsy, representing 69% of the sample. The most biopsied anatomical location was the tongue. The most prevalent pathology group was epithelial pathology, followed by non-neoplastic proliferative lesions. The most prevalent pathological entity was fibroma, followed by papilloma. Clinical and histological diagnoses were concordant in 55,6% of the cases. Conclusion: The study population was affected by a diverse group of pathological entities, which highlights the importance of doing a histological study. The lack of information about the clinical diagnosis in the request of the histological study and the poor storage of the reports were the main problems observed in this study.
